Athi Mfikili- External Stakeholder Communication
Athi Mfikili is a PhD student registered at Nelson Mandela University (formerly known as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) and is hosted by the South African Environmental Observation Network, Elwandle Node in Port Elizabeth. His research project investigates the evidence of the Late-Holocene tsunami deposits in selected estuaries along the South African coast and predicts future risks. This research will be incorporated into the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas. Athi is supervised by Dr Tommy Bornman, the Elwandle Node manager and also Dr Hayley Cawthra, a senior geologist at Council for Geosciences, who is also a research associate at Centre for Coastal Paleoscience at Nelson Mandela University. Athi has been at SAEON Elwandle Node since 2012 as DST-NRF intern, where he worked closely with Dr Bornman on the monitoring of the salt marsh distribution of selected estuaries in the southern Cape. Thereafter, he registered for MSc at the Nelson Mandela University (then NMMU) where he investigated the factors influencing the distribution of Spartina maritima salt marsh in the Keurbooms Estuary. His other research interest includes sea level rise and Geographical Information Systems. Apart from science, Athi loves sport, he spends his free time either on the grounds or behind the mic as a sports presenter at Madibaz Radio, the campus radio station at Nelson Mandela University
