Nozi Hambaze left formal teaching to pursue her passion, and unique talent, for working with children outside the classroom.  As Education Outreach Officer at Elwandle Coastal Node, she strives to nurture our young, budding scientists from previously disadvantaged schools by equipping them with the necessary, baseline skills required for scientific enquiry.  She achieves this by implementing a process of active learning involving participation in ongoing long-term monitoring programmes and by arranging and hosting dedicated science camps.  Before joining SAEON in 2010, Nozi worked as Education Outreach Officer at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity where substantial experience was gained in environmental education.  Nozi also holds a Teachers Diploma, a Weather Observation Certificate from the South African Weather Services and an Advanced Certificate in Environmental Education from Rhodes University.  Nozi also has a passion for the social sciences and makes valuable contributions to the Algoa Bay Sentinel Site initiative in this capacity by assisting scientists with engaging the public on coastal issues.  An example of putting these skills to work would be her recent effort employed in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan to estimate the perceived impact of harmful algal blooms on commercial and recreational use of coastal resources.
