- Introduction
- Egagasini Node for marine-offshore systems is an observation site of SAEON that is hosted by new Oceans and Coasts branch of Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), and also works closely with the Fisheries Branch of Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). The Node’s science education and outreach program has taken advantage to use this opportunity and build scientist-educator-student-learner relationships. The integration of marine science research into school science through long-term school based monitoring both supports and uplifts education standards which helps to create the next generation of scientists. The challenges and the importance of teaching marines sciences have been well acknowledged by the Department of Basic Education (DBE). Egagasini Node endeavours to encourage improved learning of science skills in an environmental science context.
- Marine Science and Climate Change: Elevating Excellence in School Sciences
- A grade 11 Marine Science Programme that has sort to support the development of learner skills by using climate change as a platform within the context of marine sciences. About 35 grade 11 learners from about 20 schools in fishing communities and areas of abject poverty around Cape Peninsula were given an opportunity think critically, improve their data analysis and project writing skills. Scientists from different organisations and experts of different fields of Marine Sciences engaged learners on the work they do conducting work shops to encourage understanding on various Marine Science topics.
