Introduction
The SAEON Arid Lands Node science education outreach programme was established in 2014 and initially focuses on schools in and around Kimberley. The first schools that are involved are Emang Mmogo Comprehensive School, Green Point High School, Hoërskool Diamantveld and Thabane High School. The programme aims to contribute to the development of a skilled work force in environmental sciences through learner support, educator support and school based monitoring projects.
The SAEON Arid Lands Node collaborates with other institutions involved in environmental science outreach programmes, such as the Northern Cape Department of Environment and Nature Conservation, SANParks, etc., to optimise the use of resources available for outreach activities and maximise exposure to learners and educators. The node often participates in platforms such as National Science Week and SciFest to raise awareness among learners of the career opportunities available in environmental sciences.
