File formats and conventions

I have been trying to open an .OSD file - without success.

I think we need to limit the files we use to those used by specific programs only

We possibly also need some conventions when naming files. I do not know if this is an issue - but if we are to achieve some consistency we need to address this.  This may become an issue with logger files if we do not include the locality, the dates of start and finish.
